Shopping Small: A Small Business Guide

Did you know that the Saturday after Black Friday is known as Small Business Saturday? As a small business owner, this is especially important to me because I would not be where I am today without the support of my clients and their trust in me and my team to bring their interior dreams for their homes to life. When I started Emily June Designs back in 2016, I had no idea what it would turn into. Fast forward to now, I have an incredible team who believes in the work here at Emily June Designs just as much as I do. Never did I imagine my designs would be featured in publications, both print and online, nor did I see being the Next In Design Ambassador. Growing this small business into what it is now has been an adventure I am so thankful for. I like to think of shopping small as a chance to fund the dreams of entrepreneurs. That being said, in this June Journal, I am giving you a full-day guide to map out some of my favorite local small businesses here in Houston. So grab your parents, siblings, friends, or whoever is going to encourage a little retail therapy and buckle in for a day full of shopping small. You will be sure to stumble upon unique gifts and special treasures that cannot be mass-produced.

DUO Coffee and Pilates

Kickstart your day with a perfect blend of coffee, delectable bites, and the option for a refreshing Pilates session at DUO Coffee and Pilates. This cozy spot, conveniently located just steps away from our office building, is our top choice for a delightful coffee experience paired with flavorful treats. Some of our go-to orders here at the office include the Iced Oat Milk Latte, Matcha, and their seasonal Pumpkin Spice Latte—an absolute favorite that we eagerly enjoy before it disappears for the season, so be sure to grab it while you can.

Courtney Barton

Once you've fueled up for the day, we recommend heading over to Courtney Barton, a home goods store nestled on the corner of a charming tree-lined street. The space host an array of textiles, carefully curated furnishings, pottery, Mughal-inspired jewelry, hand-poured candles, and many other unique treasures. Inspiration is around every corner, creating a vibrant world of color that aligns perfectly with what we do here at Emily June Designs.

BJ Oldies Antique Shop

While still hunting for treasures, we believe that BJ Oldies Antique Shop is a must on the to-do list. With its unique selection of antiques, collectibles, paintings, records, and vintage toys, you are sure to stumble upon pieces that are truly one-of-a-kind. And who doesn't love the satisfaction of a good find at an antique shop?

Cactus Music

A full day of shopping is definitely cause for a moment of chill to regroup and recharge. Cactus Music is a place to hang out, discover new music from old to current hits, and maybe even discover something you would not have heard on the radio or your suggested playlist. Cactus Music is Houston's oldest independent music store and has been around for over 40 years.

Clarks Oyster Bar

No matter if your day of supporting small businesses has ended at lunch or dinner, Clark's Oyster Bar has got you covered with menu options ranging from shucked oysters, crudo, lobster roll, daily fish specials, caviar and blini, bowls of chowder and cioppino, to a much-loved burger and shoestring fries. The restaurant specializes in martinis and signature cocktails, as well as an extensive Champagne and wine list, that are sure to be the perfect way to end what was hopefully a successful day of shopping small. The oyster bar is located in the vibrant Montrose neighborhood.
