The Art of Layering
Layering is what brings a space to life by adding depth, warmth, and personality. Here at Emily June Designs we are all about layering! It’s the thoughtful mix of textures, patterns, and the little details that makes a room feel complete. Let’s take a deeper look at the art of layering and why it’s a cornerstone of impactful interior design!
How to Layer
Layering in interior design is all about building depth, warmth, and personality in a space through thoughtful, intentional choices!
It all begins with a strong base which sets the tone and color palette for the room. Once the base is established, add mid layers to build depth, which include rugs, curtains, and textured elements. Incorporate a mix of materials like the ones we talk about in the next section below. Finish will small, personal touches such as plants, meaningful art, antiques, and accessories.
Adding a mix of old and new items really helps lean into the art of layering. In each project, we really love to incorporate any vintage pieces, whether it’s something a client has inherited or a unique find they’ve picked up in the past. These special elements bring character, history, and a sense of storytelling that elevate the space.
Throughout the process, play around with contrast to keep the space visually interesting and dynamic!

Textures
Textures play a crucial role in interior design by adding warmth, interest, and variation to a space. They tend to create a sense of comfort and coziness, making rooms feel inviting and lived-in, which is something we always strive to create at EJD! Layered textures also add depth and visual interest, helping to keep the eye engaged, while preventing even the most neutral palettes from feeling flat or bland. There are several types of textures that can be layered to achieve this effect:
Soft textures like velvet pillows, linen drapes, and wool carpets add tactile richness.
Hard textures, such as metal accents and stone countertops, bring structure and contrast.
Natural textures such as rattan, jute, leather, and wood introduce an earthy organic feel that grounds a space.
Glossy and matte finishes also contribute to textured layering: glossy elements like polished metals and lacquered surfaces offer shine and contrast. While matte finishes, such as flat paints and unglazed ceramics, provide depth and a quite, understated elegance.
When thoughtfully combined, these textures work together to create a dynamic, layered interior that feel both balanced and expressive.
patterns
Patterns just a subtle yet powerful role in design just as much as textures. This is where a client can truly showcase their personality - through pattern. Whether through textiles, wallpaper, or decor, patterns can act as a focal point and often help tell a visual story that ties the whole room together and reflect the clients individual style. Here is what patterns can do for a space:
Add depth, personality, and rhythm: Patterns instantly add visual layers, and also reflect personality. Florals can feel soft and romantic, while geometrics can add a modern and edgy feel. Rhythm comes from repetition and flow. Well placed patterns can make an eye guide through the room creating harmony and cohesion. Feel free to mix different types of patterns to create a curated look!
Dynamic & Inviting: Without patterns a room can feel uninteresting. Patterns create movement and flow through a room. Whether it’s through patterned throw pillows, tiled flooring, curtains, rugs, sofas, the options are endless!
Acts as a focal point / tells a story: Patterns can be the main focus or a small detail. A bold wallpaper or statement textile can anchor a room and become the focal point. At Emily June Designs, it is known we have a love for use of patterns. We love how a pattern can tell a story for a client, whether a nod to a favorite destination, meaningful symbols, or something they resonate with.
Tips for Pattern Layering from EJD
Start with a color palette, then expand:
Begin by grounding your patterns in a consistent color palette. This ensures everything feels cohesive. Once the base tones are established, you can add complementary or accent colors for added interest!
Vary the scale:
Mixing large and small scale patterns keeps the layering balanced. For example, pair a bold, oversized floral with a small pinstripe or fine geometric print. Varying the scale prevents the space from feeling too busy or too consistent.
Mix pattern types:
Combine different types of patterns - stripes, florals, plaids, abstract, organic shapes, etc. - to create texture and visual intrigue. They key is contrast, balance, and fluidity. A structured room can ground a more fluid and playful design!

Where to Use
Not too sure where to start? Patterns and layering can be introduced in both bold statements and subtle accents, depending on the mood and style of the room. Rugs, wallpaper, pillows, lampshades, and bedding are all a great place to add and play with patterns. A patterned rug can anchor a room, while wallpaper can create an alluring background. If you’re a little intimated, throw pillows, bedding, or lampshades are a good start for adding pattern at a smaller scale. Whether you’re going for a standout moment or a quiet detail, patterns bring energy and personality wherever they’re placed.
