Blending Antiques with Modern Design

Antiques and collected pieces bring that essential layer of history, creating spaces that feel welcoming, storied, and timeless. In this bookshelf nook, clean modern finishes serve as a refined backdrop, allowing authentic, lived-in pieces to shine and tell a story that feels as though it has always belonged.
Antique Focal Points
In this intimate space, modern furnishings once again take a quiet step back, serving as a refined canvas for a striking pair of antique Oriental closet doors upholstered in custom fabric. Upon entering the room, the sliding doors serve as the focal point — their presence elevated by the thoughtful selection of the surrounding design elements. Soft lighting, moody wall tones, layered bedding, and the clean lines of the wooden bed frame and floating side table work in harmony to support, rather than compete with, the antique focal point.
Curating Contrast and Color
In our English Traditionalist project, we set out to honor the home’s history while injecting a contemporary energy. The design narrative began with a breathtaking 1940s stained-glass window, original to the house. To truly let this architectural treasure pop, we color-drenched the space, creating a saturated, seamless backdrop that allows the historic colored glass to shine through.
From there, we focused on a thoughtful mix of old and new furniture, blending modern shapes with our clients' cherished original pieces. We brought their existing sofa to life by reupholstering it in a fun striped fabric. We also wrapped these chairs in a sleek geometric textile to pair with their traditional style. These fresh silhouettes sit next to a curated coffee table and the clients' existing rug, grounding the room's more modern shapes. To finish the space with a punch of high-design contrast, we placed a very modern drink table in between each chair—a small detail that anchors the room’s playful energy and blends the home's historic ele with modern vibrance.
Modern Canvas, Historic Details
Living spaces come to life when a modern backdrop is thoughtfully contrasted with antique artifacts and collected furnishings. At our New England Nest project, we selected clean, neutral finishes throughout the kitchen and living areas to showcase the client’s extensive collection of eclectic art and antique pieces gathered through travel, including the carved wooden chest at the center of the space. Simple wall treatments and flooring create a quiet canvas that allows different design eras to coexist seamlessly, resulting in a cohesive environment that feels both inviting and visually layered. Pairing elements such as the mid-century lamp with the antique carved chest introduces a rich mix of styles that adds warmth and character. In the kitchen, sleek, elevated finishes are balanced by antique lighting, layered Persian rugs, and colorful artwork, creating a refined yet approachable palette.
Symmetry Meets Movement
Traditional design embraces symmetry and strong linear elements that evoke a sense of timelessness, but without thoughtful contrast, these spaces can feel overly formal or rigid. Incorporating antique furnishings with rich textures and patterns introduces movement. This floral sofa from our New England Nest breathes life into the moody traditional setting and softens the darker palette with color. Paired with this layered antique table, the space achieves a sense of balance — blending contrast and visual stability in a way that feels both refined and inviting.
Contrast in Traditional Design
Great design happens at the intersection of purpose and beauty. We love finding that perfect balance between architectural clean lines and layered character. For this bright and airy living room, our goal was to maximize the natural light and create a fresh, open feel. We painted the built-ins in a crisp, luminous white, establishing a brilliant blank canvas that beautifully highlights our clients' curated collection of accessories and an insane amount of antique books. To ensure the white cabinetry didn't feel flat, we lined the backs of the bookshelves with a patterned grasscloth wallpaper. This subtle addition adds an extra layer of texture and depth, proving that even a bright, neutral space can speak a language of living that is deeply layered and quietly expressive.
