A Closer Look at the Soul of Our Studio: A Conversation with Emily

The rhythm of EJD is shaped by intention and a deep appreciation for the details that make life feel truly lived in. Get to know our principal designer, Emily, and see what’s fueling her artistry recently. She shares a glimpse into the everyday moments, local inspirations, and thoughtful rituals that drive her creative vision.

The Local Lens

Great design is all about how a space makes you feel, and Emily has been captivated by the Marigold Club. It’s a wonderful place to spend time with friends and enjoy a delicious cocktail. Its incredible ambiance and flawless design details are beautiful reminders of how the atmosphere can instantly elevate an experience.

When she isn't exploring the city, Emily finds herself returning to a classic foundation for her creative fuel: the pages of House & Garden Magazine. In a fast-paced digital world, its enduring imagery remains a constant source of inspiration, honoring timeless design.

The Rhythms of Rest: Emily’s Rituals & Escapes

To create spaces full of warmth and purpose, Emily finds time to relax and reset. Her weekend unwind ritual consists of a hot yoga class at Black Swan Yoga, and she seeks out the quiet grounds of the Menil Collection or the peaceful atmosphere of the Rothko Chapel. To wind down, Emily enjoys reading: she just finished Lena Dunham’s eye-opening new memoir, Famesick.

Within the studio, the creative process is set to a nostalgic rhythm. Emily has been looping a distinct throwback: "Whatever (I Had a Dream)" from the iconic 1996 Romeo + Juliet soundtrack! It’s a classic vibe that brings an unexpected soulful energy to the drafting table.

Days in the office often call for a  much needed pick-me-up, and Emily’s go-to stop is Waygood Coffee on Kirby Drive. Conveniently right around the corner from the studio!

What’s In Store for EJD

Every project we touch is an opportunity to design around the way people truly live. Right now, Emily is particularly looking forward to an upcoming full-home renovation in the West University area.

This project will embody everything we love: structure, soul, and timeless transformation. We can’t wait to share more about our journey as this new space takes shape.

A Creative Uniform

Right now, Emily’s wardrobe is anchored by chunky heels—specifically shoes from Cole Haan, Christian Louboutin, and The Office of Angela Scott. These classic Christian Louboutins instantly elevate a simple top-and-jeans combo for an effortlessly polished look. They may not be the greatest for walking active job sites, but they are super fun for a creative day in the office!

Family, Travel, & Local Flavors

For Emily, family time is composed with care, balancing local culture with quick Texas getaways. For the Memorial Day weekend holiday, Emily and her family made the most of the beginning of the summer season with a family trip down to the Galveston coast. While away, the family spent some much needed time together relaxing on the beach, fishing, and taking it easy.

When visiting family in Austin, Emily loves to stop at Yamas Greek Restaurant. It is beautifully family-friendly, boasts flawless service, and features stunning interiors that make you feel instantly transported to Greece. When she’s back home in Houston, visiting local museums is Emily’s favorite way to gather the family and escape the summer sun.
