Summer Staycation: A Fourth of July Guide

Houston has no shortage of ways to celebrate the Fourth of July, and this summer we’re rounding up some of our favorite staycation-worthy destinations for the holiday weekend. Whether you’re hoping to catch a fireworks display, enjoy a relaxing getaway, or spend an evening exploring the city, Houston offers plenty of experiences to make the long weekend feel special.

Freedom Over Texas Festivities

For Fourth of July festivities, Freedom Over Texas  is a Houston tradition. Held annually at Eleanor Tinsley Park, this year's celebration will feature a headlining performance by Keith Urban, along with opening acts from Los Lonely Boys and Collective Soul. The evening concludes with the event's signature fireworks display illuminating the Houston skyline and providing the perfect finale to a day of celebration.

Destination Staycation: The Marlene

If you're looking for a place to escape for the weekend, The Marlene is quickly becoming one of EJD’s favorite Houston destinations. Nestled in the heart of Montrose, this restored 1910 neoclassical mansion has been transformed into a French-inspired boutique hotel. Even if you're not staying overnight, a visit to Bar Madonna is well worth the trip. Open to both guests and visitors, the bar offers thoughtfully crafted cocktails inspired by French and New Orleans culture, creating an atmosphere that feels like an escape while remaining right in the heart of the city.

Elevated Escape: Hotel Daphne

Another EJD favorite this summer season for a quick getaway is Hotel Daphne located in the Heights. Hotel Daphne offers thoughtfully designed interiors that feel relaxed and unique with equally impressive city views and a range of room options including a penthouse suite. Bar Daphne and the hotel’s classic italian-style restaurant Hypsi are the perfect place to unwind after the short work week and enjoy the holiday weekend.

Texan 4th of July at Little Rey

For a relaxed evening meal, head to Little Rey for a casual dining experience the whole family can enjoy. With both indoor and outdoor seating, it's an ideal spot to gather after a day of celebrating. Tex-Mex is a Houston staple, especially during the Fourth of July weekend, and Little Rey serves up classic favorites—from flavorful tacos to wood-fired chicken—making it the perfect place to enjoy a festive meal close to home.

La Jardinier’s Weekend Brunch

To end the weekend on a high note, make your way to La Jardinier for Sunday brunch. A longtime EJD favorite when spending a day exploring Houston’s Museum District, the restaurant offers an elevated brunch menu with something for every palate. From lobster and pork belly Benedicts to filet mignon and eggs and fresh tagliatelle, each dish is thoughtfully prepared and perfect for a leisurely holiday weekend meal.

Family Fun at Discovery Green

If you're looking for family-friendly activities throughout the holiday weekend, Discovery Green offers something for everyone. Spend the afternoon cooling off with kayaking at Kinder Lake, letting the kids enjoy the splash areas and playgrounds, or exploring the park's art installations. Visitors can also take advantage of wellness classes, live music performances on Sundays, lawn games, and seasonal programming throughout the grounds.
